Stokksnes Peninsula, located in southeastern Iceland, is a striking and photogenic area known for its dramatic landscapes, black sand beaches, and the iconic Vestrahorn Mountain.

Location: Stokksnes Peninsula is situated about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) east of the town of Höfn in southeastern Iceland.

Accessibility: The peninsula is accessible by car via the Ring Road (Route 1). From Höfn, it's a short drive east on Route 1, followed by a turn onto a gravel road leading to Stokksnes. The gravel road is well-maintained and suitable for most vehicles.

Places to see:

  • Vestrahorn Mountain: The highlight of the Stokksnes Peninsula is Vestrahorn, a dramatic mountain often called “Batman Mountain” due to its distinctive shape. The mountain rises sharply from the surrounding flatlands and black sand beaches.

  • Black Sand Beaches: The black sand dunes and beaches at Stokksnes provide a stunning contrast to the sharp peaks of Vestrahorn.

  • Reflections and Tidal Pools: The shallow tidal pools on the beach often create beautiful reflections of Vestrahorn,

  • Viking Village: Near the entrance to Stokksnes, there is a replica of Viking village built as a movie set. While the film project was never completed, the set remains and is an interesting site to explore.

Best Time to Visit: Stokksnes Peninsula can be visited year-round.

Facilities: The Viking Café at Stokksnes offers basic amenities, including restrooms, a café, and information about the area. There are no extensive facilities directly at Vestrahorn, so plan accordingly.

Entrance Fee: There is an entrance fee to access the Stokksnes area, which can be paid at the Viking Café located at the entrance. The fee helps maintain the area and provides access to the parking lot, beach, and other facilities.
