Schynige Platte is a scenic mountain ridge in the Bernese Oberland, offering breathtaking views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, as well as Lake Thun, Lake Brienz and the vast Swiss Alps. At 2,076 meters, it’s a perfect spot for hiking, alpine flora spotting and enjoying traditional Swiss mountain charm.
Getting to Schynige Platte is an experience in itself. You start your journey in Wilderswil, just outside Interlaken, where you board the historic Schynige Platte Railway. This nostalgic cogwheel train, in operation since 1893, climbs the mountainside in a leisurely 50-minute ride, passing through forests, rocky slopes, and lush meadows. As you ascend, the views become increasingly spectacular, setting the tone for what awaits at the top.
Once you arrive, there’s plenty to explore. One of the highlights is the Alpine Garden, home to over 650 species of Swiss mountain plants. For those who love hiking, the Panorama Trail is an easy loop that showcases stunning views of the Jungfrau region. More experienced hikers can take on the Schynige Platte to First hike, a spectacular ridge trail leading all the way to Grindelwald First.
If you’re looking to relax, the mountaintop restaurant is a great place to enjoy a traditional Swiss meal while soaking in the breathtaking scenery.
