The Glacier Gorge (Gletscherschlucht) in Grindelwald is a stunning natural attraction where visitors can walk through a dramatic rock canyon carved by the Lower Grindelwald Glacier over thousands of years. Located just a short distance from the center of Grindelwald, this gorge offers a unique experience with towering rock walls, rushing glacial waters, and interactive elements that make the visit both exciting and educational.
A well-maintained wooden walkway leads visitors 1 kilometer into the gorge, following the milky-blue Lütschine River as it carves its way through the rock. Along the way, you can admire the massive rock formations, some of which rise up to 300 meters high, and see the effects of glacial erosion up close. Information panels along the route explain the geology, history, and forces that shaped the canyon over time.
One of the highlights of the gorge is the Spiderweb, a large net suspended above the rushing water, where adventurous visitors can step out and experience the power of the gorge from above. The constant sound of thundering water and cool, misty air inside the gorge add to the immersive experience.
The Glacier Gorge is located about 35 minutes on foot from the center of Grindelwald or can be reached in 5 minutes by bus or car. Parking is available at the entrance.
Seraina's Tip: If you're looking for an adrenaline rush, don't miss the Canyon Swing, where you can freefall 90 meters into the gorge before swinging between its towering rock walls—an unforgettable thrill for adventure seekers.
