This is Meteora, one of the most sought out destinations in the Greek mainland. It's a complex of 6 open monasteries on top of a landscape of spectacular rocks, carved through the ages by Nature.

  • One really wonders how the monks built those monasteries on top of those rocks, more than 7 centuries ago.

  • The Meteora is actually the second most significant group of monasteries in Greece, after Athos, the "Holy Mountain" of Halkidiki.

  • To get there, you need to drive towards the rural city of Kalambaka. Once you get to Kalambaka, you are basically already in Meteora, as the rocks are soaring right next. A truly incredible sight to see.

  • The entrance fees at each monastery is 3 euros, which means if you're planning to visit them all, it will be 18 euros.

  • Best time to visit is during fall and winter. This place tends to get particularly crowded during the summer months, with coach buses lining up one after another. Also, fall and winter weather often creates amazing sceneries, with low clouds rolling between the rocks, adding to the mystic character of the place.

  • The roads that get you to Meteora are generally really well taken care of, though I would recommend having a 4x4 car in case you want to visit mountains and mountainous villages near Meteora, that require some off-road driving, such as the villages of Aspropotamos in Thessaly.
