Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Europe. If you visit the north of the island, a detour by this fall is therefore almost obligatory. with a width of 100 meters, a height of 44 meters and also a flow that varies from 200 m3 to 600 m3 depending on the season, rainfall and temperatures. This river descends straight from Vatnajökull and during its ascent it crosses volcanic deserts to finally arrive in the gorges of Jökulsá á Fjöllum. In this canyon, the river will then pass through several waterfalls, the first of which is Selfoss, followed a few hundred meters later by Dettifoss, then a few kilometers downstream by Hafragilsfoss. To discover the Dettifoss waterfall, you have to go a little away from the circular route through tracks with little or no tarmac but in good condition. It is possible to see the waterfall from both banks but, be careful, you will have to travel more than 60 kilometers to admire it from the west or east sides because there is no bridge. The west side of the falls is more popular, as the road is more paved and therefore more accessible and there is a large car park (about 10 minutes walk) which also allows you to see the Selfoss waterfall (10 minutes also from the car park).
For me the best view of Dettifoss is from the east. You have to take track 864.
