Located high up in the German Alps is the Schrecksee, a lake so eerie that it has earned its nickname the "fright lake". Nature lovers flock to the area to take in the breathtaking views - on a clear day, you can even see the Austrian border, located just 1,000 feet away. Although the Schrecksee is beautiful, it might be best admired from the shore since swimming in the icy 55-degree waters of the alpine lake is probably out of the question! Those up for an adventure and with a love of hiking will appreciate the challenge of the seven to eight hour round trip hike required to get to the Schrecksee. A visit to this high altitude lake is sure to make your hair stand on end - bring a camera or two to capture the moment!
