Julma-Ölkky is a deep canyon lake located in Hossa National Park in Kuusamo.
Julma-Ölkky offers spectacular views of an ancient geological formation that dates back over two billion years.
This water filled canyon is approximately 100 meters deep, resulting in the current lake with a maximum depth of just under 50 meters. The lake stretches over three kilometers within the narrow canyon, and its steep, almost vertical canyon walls rise impressively above the water surface, creating a truly mystical atmosphere.
You can explore Julma-Ölkky in various ways:
By Water: Take a boat ride to see Julma-Ölkky from the water. You can use a boat or even go kayaking.
By Land: Alternatively, you can hike along the shores of Julma-Ölkky, following the rocky cliffs.
1. Ölökyn ähkäsy trail circumnavigates the entire lake (10 km) and you can also visit the campfire site at the other end of the lake.
2. Ölökyn ylitys trail is half as short as when you cross the suspension bridge in the middle of the route to the other side for the return trip (5 km).
At the beginning of all these routes you can find a parking lot and a cafe.
The terrain is challenging and rocky, with plenty of ascents and descents, but the landscapes are beautifully rugged!
Note: This place is in deep wilderness. Your phone may not be working in here.
