Kerlingarfjöll is a stunning mountain range located in the Icelandic highlands. The mountains are made up of 10,000 year old rhyolite peaks and surrounded by steaming vents, boiling mud pools, and colorful hot springs. It is an incredible hiking destination, with plenty of trails and breathtaking views. A drive to Kerlingarfjöll on one of Iceland's most famous F-roads (Kjölur) is an adventure in itself, taking you through vast landscapes and past molten colored rocks. Just know that even though two-wheel-drives are allowed to drive it, no car rental will let you take one of their vehicles there, so it is best to rent a four-wheel-drive or take a tour.At night, you can relax in a thermal hot spring or stay in a cabin or hotel. Whether it be for a day trip or an overnight visit, Kerlingarfjöll is one of Iceland's most unique and memorable sites. There are some hot spring options so make sure you ask around in the Highlands Center for more information.

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: A geothermal mountain range in the highlands.

  • Best season: Any, but can be harder to reach during winter.

  • Best time of day: Any.

  • Nice to know: The road there can be bad and many rental car companies prohibit going there unless with certain vehicles.
