Langisjór is an iconic lake near the Vatnajökull glacier in Iceland's Central Highlands. This unique body has a really unique shape and offers some gorgeous views whichever way you decide to go along with plenty of privacy due to its remoteness. There is a parking lot with toilets and a plain camping ground for those who want to spend a night here to take it all in. I have hiked along the east side of the lake which is a lot of fun but my favourite thing is to hike Mt. Sveinstindur for some incredible 360° views and soak in the amazing landscapes this area has to offer. If you get clear skies and good visibility you're in for a once in a lifetime experience. Truly one of the most special places I've been to.
How to get there: This area is basically only accessible during summer and since it's in the highlands you should rent a 4x4 car, preferably with high clearance for the rivers. You need to get on road F208 (Fjallabak), either from the south (Road 1) or from the north via Roads 32 and F26. I personally prefer the northern route due to the attractions on the way. When you've driven for a while on F208 you'll turn east on F235 and simply keep going until you reach Langisjór. There are some rivers on the way but none of them is considered very challenging or dangerous.
QUICK NOTES:
What it is: An epic lake in the highlands of Iceland, surrounded by epic mountains, ridges and volcanic craters.
Best season: This part of the highlands is only accessible during summer except you go on a guided tour.
Best time of day: Whenever you can but sunset/sunrise is incredible up there.
Nice to know: Hike up to Sveinstindur for the most epic 360° views!
