Hveradalir, a geothermal area is located in Kerlingarfjöll in the highlands, is a true geothermal wonderland and offers a unique combination of hiking trails, rust-colored mountains and clouds of steam. It's one of the largest geothermal areas in all of Iceland, surrounded by beautiful rhyolite mountains. The road (Kjölur) is a difficult one and even though two-wheel-drives are allowed to drive it, no car rental will let you take one of their vehicles there, so it is best to rent a four-wheel-drive or take a tour. There are some hot spring options so make sure you ask around in the Highlands Center for more information.

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: A geothermal area in the highlands.

  • Best season: Any, but it can be harder to reach during winter.

  • Best time of day: Any.

  • Nice to know: The road there can be bad and many rental car companies prohibit going there unless with certain vehicles.
