This is probably one of the most iconic spots in Iceland and surprise, surprise... it's located right by the ring road on the south cast. Fellsfjara, or Diamond Beach is a breathtaking strip of black sand beach located near Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. What makes it so special are the sparkling icebergs that wash up on the shore, creating a gorgeous contrast with the volcanic black sand.

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: The iconic black sand beach that's often full of "diamonds" on the south coast.

  • Best season: Any (the ice on the beach is more dependent on the weather than the season per se).

  • Best time of day: Sunrise and sunset, both for the light but it can also get crowded during midday.

  • Nice to know: There are technically two diamond beaches, one on either side of the river mouth, it depends on the wind and currents which side the ice gets stuck on.
