I have been on this exact tour and I can highly recommend it. As the glaciers are constantly changing, the tours are never the same but the guides know the most interesting and suitable routes for the best experience. It has also been my experience that the guides tend to share very interesting insights and facts about the glaciers, how they are formed and impacted by climate change. As you hike over the ice, you'll be going past crevasses, moulins and ice sculptures and when your guide has found a good spot to climb the fun begins! The climbing can be physically demanding but I still urge you to try it out and you'll be completely safe while doing it.
As much as I love for people to experience Iceland on their own, the glaciers are a different story. They can be hard to reach and they are constantly changing which can make them very unsafe at times. That's why I always recommend people go with a professional guide when it comes to glaciers. Includes all necessary safety gear but bring proper clothing, water and snacks.
QUICK NOTES:
What it is: A glacier hike and ice climbing tour with Tröll Expeditions in Skaftafell.
Best season: Any but summer (late September until end of April).
Best time of day: When the tour is available.
Nice to know: Usually everything you might need is included (crampons, helmet etc. and even hiking boots for rent) BUT I recommend you still come well prepared with proper clothing, some snacks and water.
