Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge, also known as Red-Cloak Rift, is a stunning canyon located in Botnsfjall Mountain on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. You can easily hike up to the gorge entrance and even climb inside (can be hard during winter). According to local folklore, the gorge is a part of a dark saga about a half-giant, Bárður Snæfellsás, that threw two boys down the gorge after one of them pushed one of his daughters out to sea on an iceberg, where she drifted all the way to Greenland. Bárður later became the guardian spirit of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. Aside from the dark folk lore, it's the perfect mini adventure for people of all ages!

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: A canyon on the Snæfellsnes peninsula.

  • Best season: Any (but can be hard to enter during winter).

  • Best time of day: Any.

  • Nice to know: The hike takes around 30-45 minutes one way. Please don't go past the designated viewing platforms since it will ruin the view for the rest of the people there.
