Festung Königstein is an iconic hilltop fortress in Saxony, Germany. It is perhaps the most recognizable hilltop fortification in Europe and sits atop the table hill of the same name. With walls up to 42 metres (138 ft) high and steep sandstone faces, it has been called the 'Saxon Bastille'. Over 50 buildings dating as far back as the 13th century, along with a 152.5-metre (500 ft 4 in)-deep well make this an adventure fit for anyone looking for a bit of history and culture. Explore the many fascinating artifacts, take in the incredible views from the Elbe River overlook, or catch a glimpse of the famous Königstein Wine Barrel, crafted in 1725 by alchemist J.B. Böttger under the orders of Augustus the Strong. Festung Königstein is open all year round, so come take a walk through history!
