If you're up for a walk that’s brimming with both history and stunning views, lace up your shoes and hit the Fort Nepean trail in Mornington Peninsula. This spot blends rugged coastal beauty with fascinating military history from World War I and II. The walk is about 5 kilometers round trip from the car park, and trust me, it’s totally worth it. As you trek along, you’ll wander through lush bushland and take in full views of the dramatic coastline.
When you finally reach Fort Nepean, you’re greeted by a mix of old fortifications and breathtaking ocean views. The fort itself is like a real-life history lesson, complete with tunnels, bunkers, and old artillery. From the gun emplacements to the barracks, it’s a genuine slice of the past. Plus, the views over The Rip, where Port Phillip Bay meets the Southern Ocean, are nothing short of epic. The lookout offers sweeping panoramas of the bay entrance and the crashing waves below. If you love exploring, there are plenty of nooks and crannies to check out within the fort. The walk back along the coast is just as beautiful, making this trip a fantastic blend of history, nature, and a bit of exercise.
