The Berlengas Archipelago is a real treasure in Portugal! With crystal clear waters, exotic marine life and a magnificent landscape, Berlengas is an invitation to an unforgettable experience close to nature. Visits take place between June and September every year - August being the most crowded month.

Honestly? It doesn't even look real! We were impressed by the exuberance of this place. This natural paradise is located in Peniche, in the west of the country, and an hour and ten minutes drive from Lisbon, and is composed of three main islands: Berlenga Grande, Estelas and Farilhões.

There are several companies that offer maritime transport services to the island, varying in prices, size of the vessels and speed/quickness with which the island can be reached. We bought our tickets online (BerlengasTur), but it is also possible to purchase these in person on the same day. All companies are conveniently located in the Peniche Marina.

The regular duration of our visit to Berlengas is short (3 to 4 hours only) and is subject to the purchase of the BerlengasPass (3 Euros) on the ICNF website, the public entity responsible for ensuring the preservation of this ecosystem: https://berlengaspass.icnf.pt/

The boat ride takes around 40 minutes and can be quite intense, depending on the climate conditions! If you tend to get seasick on boat trips, take precautions (take medicine for seasickness first, have a light diet before boarding, do not consume anything during the trip...). As Berlengas is a natural reserve, the archipelago is protected by law and everything is very well signposted and organized.

Our tip is to go straight to Forte of São João Baptista as soon as you disembark on the island. Enjoy that part by diving, sunbathing and contemplating nature. The water is crystal clear and you can see a lot of fishes and even octopuses down there. It's worth taking diving material to observe the bottom of the sea! It is also possible to visit the fort and even stay there for the night. Other activities include taking boat trips through the caves, renting kayaks, and birdwatching (Berlengas is a paradise for seagulls)!

Then, slowly return to Praia da Berlenga Grande, right next to where the boat arrives / departs. We recommend to manage your time very wisely, because it goes by super fast!

Please note that it is not recommended to leave the pre-established trails in the island. Berlengas is a very well preserved natural reserve, so it is necessary to be very respectful of the local biodiversity, taking the trash with you and causing as little impact as possible on the environment.

Wear light clothes, comfortable shoes, bring a hat, beach towel and everything that might be comfortable for you on this type of tour. Take water and snacks if you don't intend to lose time in the local restaurant.

Last but not least, bear in mind that this treasure belongs to everyone and that it is our responsibility to preserve it.
