Castelo dos Mouros (Castle of the Moors) is a medieval fortification built by the Moors (muslim civilization) between the 8th and 9th centuries, located in the city of Sintra, Portugal. It is part of the so-called Sintra Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The castle sits on top of the tallest hill of this area, having been a strategic spot during the "Reconquista" period, context in which the Christian military forces engaged in the conquest of Lisbon in 1147.
This visit is a athletic one, demanding comfortable footwear, good health and lots of energy. Make sure you are prepared to walk steep streets and tracks.
