"A Ginjinha" is a traditional place (over 180 years old) in downtown Lisbon, located at Largo de São Domingos, right next to the Rossio Square, where you can buy shots or bottles of a typical Portuguese liqueur made with "ginja" berries, a sort of cherry. This sweet alcoholic beverage can be served with or without the fruit in the bottom of the cup.
This drink has several brands and origins throughout the country. The one sold here is called Espinheira, originated in Lisbon. But one can find similar products coming from other cities / villages such as Óbidos, Alcobaça, Marvão and Covilhã. Ginja is perfect after any meal!
If you would like to try another local ginjinha, there is also another shop 60 meters away from this one called "Ginjinha Sem Rival". The taste and density are slightly different, and certainly worth the comparison!
In case you really like tasting ginjinha while in Lisbon, and would like to take home a few bottles, please note you can also find several brands of this liqueur in all of Lisbon's supermarkets, at their beverage sections, where you can find lower prices.
