Augstmatthorn is one of the most rewarding mountain hikes in Switzerland’s Emmental Alps. With rolling views over both Lake Brienz and Interlaken, the end goal of this 17 kilometre route is covered with dusty trails, scenic woodlands and a particularly challenging ridgeline.
HIKE DETAILS:
Start: Harder Kulm. Ride the cogwheel train from Interlaken Ost to Harder Kulm. The hike starts from here. First part of the trail will take you through a forest area before you ascent to the ridge line. Once on the ridge line the trail requires all your focus as the trail getting narrower and narrower with each steps.
Many people stops at Suggiture peak at 2085 meter because of their comfor but if you are okay with heights I recommend keep going and summit Augstmatthorn at 2136 meters.
The hike is long, the total distance is 17.6 km long (out and back)
Elevation gain is approx 1000 meters.
TIP: watch out for ibexes. They love hanging out in summer time at this area.
TIP2: bring plenty of water, there is no water source on this hike.
