If you feeling adventurous, of course you can skip the train and hike.

HIKE DETAILS:

Starts: take the train to Capolago - River S. Vitale station and from there cross the platform to arrive at the departure station of Monte Generoso.

Take the train to the middle station, called Bellavista, Mittelstation Zahnradbahn.

From here the hike takes you up to Monte Generoso in 3,5 - 4 hours. Distance is 9,2 km with 675 meters of elevations.

Once you reach the top enjoy the panoramic views. It's incredible.

Tip: if you plan to skip the train ride you can of course hike but prepare for a a long day hike.
