Tianmen Mountain, near the Avatar mountains, is another one of those mountain views that has become iconic in China.
From the iconic 99-bends road and "stairway to heaven" path that leads to the hole in the mountain, to the cliff-side walkways that hang 1,400 metres about the ground and the mountaintop temple, Tianmenshan is not to be missed.
From Zhangjiajie town there are 2 ways to reach the mountain:
bus - the bus will take you up the famous 99-bend road up to the base of the famous "stairway to heaven"
cablecar - the world's longest cablecar journey at 7km (30minutes) takes you over some incredible views overlooking the road below.= and will take you up above the mountain.
Personally, I recommend taking the bus/ lower cablecar route up to the stairway to heaven staircase and then taking the long cablecar back down to town.
Please note that drones are not allowed on the mountain and they will confiscate them when going through security - making it a pain to get back later - so i'd suggest just leaving it at the hotel... coming from experience.
