Raymond Island is a total gem in the Gippsland Lakes and a super fun spot to check out. This little island, named after William Odell Raymond, is only about 6 km long and 2 km wide, making it a breeze to explore. You’ll hop on the Raymond Island Ferry from Paynesville to get there, and the best part? It’s free for walk-on passengers!
Once you’re on the island, you’ll be greeted by its laid-back vibe and, of course, its adorable koala population. It’s like stepping into a koala haven where these cute creatures are pretty much everywhere you look. While the Koala Trail is definitely a must-do (and I’ve got that pinned on my map with all the details), there’s more to Raymond Island than just its famous residents.
Take some time to soak up the island’s charming local feel, and don’t miss the historical spots like the old school and church, which add a touch of heritage to your visit. The beaches here are perfect for a quiet day by the water, ideal for a peaceful picnic or a leisurely stroll along the shore. If you're into birdwatching, Raymond Island is a haven for spotting various species in their natural habitat. With its fantastic mix of nature, history, and local charm, the island is well worth a leisurely exploration while you’re there.
