Okay, I'm going to be completely honest with you, I didn’t want to go to Burra at all. My sister, who was traveling with me at the time, was super keen to check it out, so I reluctantly got dragged along. But man, I was actually surprised by how unique and cool this tiny town turned out to be! The main attraction is the Burra Historical Trail, a self-guided tour also known as Tourist Drive 16, which lets you unlock the secrets of Burra’s past. You can pick up a key from the friendly folks at the information center to get started.
The trail includes everything from old beer cellars to iconic gaols where Breaker Morant was filmed which is an Aussie war and history movie. I’m not usually too interested in history, but learning about this town was genuinely fascinating. The self-guided tour costs $30.00, with a $50 Heritage Key Deposit required for each group, refunded upon the key’s return. The gaol is especially aesthetic, and I even filmed a Wes Anderson-style reel there, which was a trend at the time, making it the perfect location. If you’re a history buff or just a curious explorer, definitely stop in and check it out I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it!
