If you’re traveling west along the Great Ocean Road, the Gibson Steps will likely be your first taste of the incredible towering cliffs and rugged coastline that define this area. Just a short drive from the iconic Twelve Apostles, this spot offers a fantastic introduction to the dramatic landscapes of Victoria. The cliffs here provide some of the most breathtaking views of the rugged coastline, setting the stage for the natural wonders to come.
The name "Gibson Steps" comes from the set of steps that lead you down from the cliffs to the beach below, offering a front-row seat to one of Victoria’s most stunning natural landscapes. Most beaches in this area are either tough to access or closed to the public, so this is a great stop to actually get down to sea level and fully appreciate the sheer size of the cliffs and coastline. As you descend the steps, you'll be greeted by a beach flanked by towering cliffs on either side. The views are absolutely spectacular, think dramatic rock formations and crashing waves that make for an epic backdrop. It truly feels like stepping into a postcard!
