Hiking up the Hartz Mountains Summit Track is like diving straight into Tasmania’s raw and captivating beauty. This 7.6-kilometer trail, which is an out-and-back route, winds through Hartz Mountains National Park’s diverse landscapes, from lush eucalypt forests to misty rainforests and rugged alpine terrain. One of the standout moments of the hike is Lake Esperance. This serene spot feels like a hidden gem along the trail. The lake’s clear waters mirror the surrounding peaks perfectly, creating a peaceful place for a quick break or some stunning photos.
Now, about my personal experience, let’s just say it was a bit of a saga. On the day I tackled this trail, the weather was classic Tassie: rainy and wild. The wind was so fierce I felt like it was trying to throw me off the mountain. I encountered plenty of hikers turning back, which, in hindsight, would have been a wise choice. But my stubborn streak pushed me onward. I made it to the summit, but I ended up soaked through and pretty battered, largely because I didn’t realize washing my waterproof gear would strip it of its effectiveness.
The point of sharing this isn’t to scare you off, because the views here are absolutely incredible and worth every bit of effort on a clear day. Just make sure you're prepared for the ever-changing weather and be smart about your gear. A sunny day can make this hike a 10/10, but in rough conditions, it’s a different story.
