The highest mountain peak in all of Australia is definitely a must-add to your bucket list. Standing tall at 2,228 meters above sea level, you might expect a climb that's a real beast, but don’t worry, this hike is surprisingly manageable, and you'll earn serious bragging rights by reaching the top.

There are a few routes to choose from for this adventure. You can take the Summit Walk from Thredbo, which is a 13-kilometer trek, or opt for the Summit Walk from Charlotte Pass, a bit longer at 18.3 kilometers. For a grander adventure, the Main Range Trail from Charlotte Pass stretches to 23.5 kilometers. I tackled the Main Range Trail and highly recommend it. Although it’s a long hike, the incline is pretty gentle for a peak of this height. Plus, this route treats you to breathtaking views of lakes, mountains, and even some fun creek crossings. All of these trails are extremely well maintained, given that this mountain is one of the most walked in the country.

The Main Range Trail also boasts stunning views of the Snowy Mountains, historic huts, and vibrant wildflowers. I did the hike clockwise, which meant the last few kilometers were quite steep, but many folks suggest going anti-clockwise for an easier finish, so it's really up to you. Starting at sunrise, I enjoyed a mostly solitary trek until the second half, so if you prefer a quieter experience, getting an early start is key. It took me about 5 hours, so plan your hike with plenty of daylight. And definitely check the weather conditions before you go, while the wind was manageable for me, winter can bring snow and make the hike significantly more challenging. Pack accordingly and enjoy the incredible experience of standing atop Australia's highest peak!
