A must-see for anyone visiting Lisbon, the Monastery of Santa Maria de Belém, commonly known as Mosteiro dos Jerónimos ("Jerónimos Monastery"), is a masterpiece of 16th-century architecture, in Manueline style. It was built to materialize the religious impetus of King Manuel I and to praise the then contemporary Portuguese discoveries.

Classified as a National Monument in 1907, and included on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1983, the most important monument in Portugal was also considered one of the 7 wonders of the country. This is the most visited monument in Portugal!

Lusideias recommends visiting Mosteiro dos Jerónimos late in the day to avoid lines and crowds. From our experience, getting there between 4:00-5:00pm (opening hours are 9:30am to 6:00pm) will help you have a more pleasant experience as well as take better pictures. Please note that tickets are sold up until 5:00pm and the last entrance takes place at 5:30pm.
