Torre de Belém ("Belém Tower") is perhaps one of Portugal's most identifiable monuments in Portuguese Manueline style and one of the country's widely recognized symbols. It is a 16th century fortification situated in the margins of the Tagus river and has historically served as a gateway to Lisbon.

In fact, over 500 years ago, it was fully surrounded by water, being located in the middle of the river. Torre de Belém had several functions over time: defensive, customs, reception, etc.

Torre de Belém is an UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with Mosteiro dos Jerónimos ("Jerónimos Monastery"), another highlight of the Belém neighborhood.

This is a mandatory visit in Belém, together with Mosteiro dos Jerónimos.
