These beautiful freshwater springs hold special significance for Māori. The clarity of the water is incredible, and the surface ripples as the water bubbles up from under the ground. They are the largest freshwater springs in New Zealand and the visual clarity of the water is about 76 metres, making it one of the clearest waters in the world!

Follow the track around the stream and explore the springs, with information boards providing details on the cultural and spiritual significance of the sacred waters for Māori.

Remember: Treat the sacred site with respect, stay on marked paths and follow any signage. Do not swim in the springs or pollute them in any way.

Personal tip: This is the kind of location where you want to slow down, admire nature and take in the beautiful scenery. Don’t rush it!

Pronunciation: Te Waikoropupu: teh - wai-kor-ror-poo-poo
