One of New Zealand’s most beautiful alpine huts, Angelus Hut is a track for experienced hikers to enjoy the backcountry. Tucked away in Nelson Lakes National Park, the hut sits beside the stunning Angelus Lake, surrounded by towering mountains, alpine meadows and multiple alpine tarns along the way. It is a photographer’s dream destination with beautiful nighttime astrophotography, and a magical golden hour at sunrise and sunset.
Getting there: Starting from St Arnaud, there are several tracks you can take to get to Angelus hut. For the best views, start with a steep climb and switchbacks to reach the Robert Ridge track. This should only be attempted in good weather as the ridge is extremely exposed to wind, rain and snow. For a loop track, you can return on the Speargrass Creek track along the valley floor, or via the Travers and Cascade Track along Lake Rotoiti. Visit the DOC website for more details.
Remember: Always hike within your ability, carry a PLB and let someone know your trip intentions. Angelus lake is in an alpine environment, where the weather can change quickly. Check the weather forecast, pack the right gear and stay safe.
Personal tip: Waking up for sunrise is a must, the conditions were magical. If the hut is booked, you may be able to secure a campsite booking and tent under the stars. There is also a watertaxi that you can catch from St Arnaud if you are looking for a shorter day.
Pronunciation: Rotoiti - roe-toe-ee-tee
