Arthurs Pass is the main route connecting the West Coast to Canterbury. The Otira Viaduct lookout offers stunning views of the rugged scenery of surrounding mountains, forests and valleys. It’s a perfect spot to stretch your legs and snap some memorable photos. If you’re lucky you may be visited by the kea - NZ’s alpine parrot. Arthurs Pass is a two-hour drive from Christchurch or Greymouth. From the Otira Viaduct car park, it is just a short walk to the viewpoint.

Remember: Do not feed the kea! If you are lucky enough to see our cheeky alpine parrots, keep an eye on your gear and enjoy interacting with their playful curiosity. You can also report kea sightings online if you identify their tags!

Personal tip: In the winter months, Arthurs Pass can be closed due to snow and weather conditions. Always check online for road closures and follow advice if snow chains are required.

Pronunciation: Otira - or-tee-raa
