This is one of Twizel’s hidden gems, a short walk with spectacular views. From the lookout point, there are incredible views of the surrounding lake, and it is just a short 4km, 1.5 hour loop track. Sections of the track are also shared with mountain bikers, share the trail and it is courteous to give way to passing bikes. It is an easy to moderate track with short climbs.

Start the walk from the Benmore Dam picnic area, just off State Highway 83. Follow signage for the Peninsula track and lookout.

Remember: Be prepared for all weather. The track is quite exposed, sunny in summer or windy in winter.

Personal tip: I’m all about low effort and high reward, I say this walk is better than the famous Roy’s Peak (you heard it here first)!! In summer, take a hat, sunscreen and water! Autumn is a beautiful time of year to see the trees changing colour.
