One of the Coromandel’s best kept secrets, Whenuakura is an island shaped as - you guessed it - a donut. The island was formed after the collapse of a large blow hole, creating a turquoise lagoon in the centre of the island. With kayaks or a stand up paddleboard, you can paddle through a sea cave to enter the ‘donut hole’. Once “inside” the island, you are surrounded by beautiful cliffs and native bush. It’s a truly spectacular spot. It is a protected, predator-free island and you cannot land on the island itself.

Whenuakura is only accessible by kayak or paddle board, located 1 km off from Whangamata beach. You will need a reasonable level of fitness and confidence in the water to complete the return journey and it is advised to go with a tour company as they will know the best conditions for wind, tides and sea swell. If you are an experienced kayaker, you will be able to free-hire a kayak from Whangamata.

Remember: Leave no trace, do not get out of your boat or land on the island. Do not attempt this alone if it is outside your comfort and skill level. People have been rescued from Whenuakura - stay safe and go with a guide.

Personal tip: Soak in the moment when you are inside the lagoon. It is a magical experience and the moments are fleeting. Take your photos, but also just appreciate being in the moment.

Pronunciation: Whenuakura - feh-noo-aa-koo-raa

Whangamata - faa-ngaa-maa-taa
