The road out to French Pass is one of New Zealand's iconic beautiful drives. Located at the top of the Marlborough Sounds, French Pass is a narrow channel that separates D’Urville Island from the mainland, known for its strong currents, swirling tidal flows and is a challenging passage for boats to navigate. Fresh Pass is also a haven for marine life, with dolphins, seals, stingrays and sea birds frequently spotted in the area.
French Pass is more about the journey than the destination, a narrow gravel road follows the ridgeline with spectacular panoramic views over the Marlborough Sounds to the left and right. It feels like the edge of the world and you will likely have the place to yourself. From Rai Valley, follow signs for French Pass, via Okiwi Bay. The drive is 1 hour and 40 minutes.
Remember: The narrow road is susceptible to landslides. Check for road closures and follow all road signage. Drive carefully and allow vehicles to pass where it is safe to do so.
Personal tip: Stay overnight at the DOC campsite at French Pass. On a summer’s day, the coastline is beautiful for a swim at Elmslie Bay. If the weather is wet and rainy, you’ll experience the moody ruggedness of the region.
Pronunciation: Okiwi - or-kee-wee
