Nestled in the lush native bush on the West Coast, Hokitika Gorge is an incredible spot known for its gorgeous blue waters. The river is fed from glaciers and the vibrant blue is from glacial flour suspended in the water.

However… My Instagram v Reality moment at Hokitika Gorge went mega-viral with 9m views! We visited in winter after a week of heavy rain and the water was NOT blue. Don’t let that put you off, it’s still a magical experience to visit the gorge in the rain, as the bush comes alive and waterfalls flow straight into the gorge.

From the car park, there is a beautiful, short walk through the bush with several viewpoints. Continue down the track to cross the swing bridge and even get to the water's edge.

Remember: Swimming is not advised, as the river is swift, deep, cold and dangerous.

Personal tip: My Instagram v Reality moment at Hokitika Gorge went mega-viral with 9m views! Remember to check the weather and hopefully this is a reality check so you’re not shocked that a river changes colour when it rains…

Pronunciation: Hokitika - hor-kee-tee-kaa
