Witness the power of nature as the Waikato River surges through a narrow gorge with more than 220,000 litres of water per second gushing over the waterfall. There is a footbridge over the falls, an incredible watch the waterfalls and get mesmerised by the swirling waters below. There are various lookout points and walking tracks, so do not stop at the bridge - continue on to the falls lookout where the water exits the gorge and drops 15 metres before returning to the calm Waikato River.

Huka Falls are a 10 minute drive north of Taupō, located in the Wairakei Valley. Follow signage for walking tracks on both sides of the river for different vantage points. These tracks are all at an easy difficulty level.

Remember: Stay safe at all times, do not climb or cross any fences. Keep an eye on young children.

Personal tip: The falls can often be crowded as it is an incredibly popular destination (for good reason!). Most people will only go as far as the lookout bridge - so wander further and you will miss the crowds. For people wanting a more intimate experience, book the Huka Falls River Cruise or Huka Jet and you will travel up the Waikato River and experience the power of the falls from the base of the river.

My personal favourite is the River Cruise, for a relaxing journey learning about the natural flora and fauna - you will also get to see the dam release at Aratiatia Rapids, which is almost as good as Huka Falls themselves!

Pronunciation:

Huka - hoo-kah

Waikato - why-kah-toe

Taupō - toe-paw

Aratiatia - ah-rah-tee-ah-tee-ah

Wairakei - why-rah-kay
