One of the most incredible wildlife experiences is located in Kaikōura - and it’s completely free. Point Kean is a rocky shoreline, with a coastal track that takes you alongside seals in their natural habitat, one of the largest mainland seal colonies in New Zealand. You will often see seals basking on the rocks, swimming in the sea, or playing along the shore. Pups are born in spring and remain at the colony until they are weaned at 12 months old, so you will likely see them year-round!

In addition to the lower coastal track, there is a peninsula track along the clifftops, with various viewpoints across the beautiful Kaikōura coastline.

Remember: These seals are in their natural habitat. Observe seals quietly,  keep dogs and small children well away from seals, avoid getting nearer than 10-20 metres to seals, do not touch the seal under any circumstances, do not get between the seal and its access to water, do not feed the seals.

Personal tip: This is one of my favourite wildlife experiences ever, the seals are so fun to watch for hours on end, especially the playful pups. Allow half a day, so that you can take your time and enjoy the scenery and seals!

Pronunciation: Kaikōura: kai-KOR-rah
