This hike has been named one of the best day walks in the world - and for good reason. The Tongariro Crossing passes through spectacular volcanic scenery. Highlights of the walk include the Emerald Lakes and Blue Lake, steaming vents, ancient lava flows, ancient craters and alpine flora. Tongariro National Park is a dual UNESCO World Heritage Site for its cultural significance and natural features.

The Tongariro Crossing should not be attempted during winter. The season is from October to April, bookings are free via the DOC website, but are required to catch a shuttle. The 20 km walk takes 7-9 hours to complete and is steep and challenging in sections. Visit the DOC website for more information.

Remember: The track is in an alpine environment. Take the right gear, be prepared for changing weather and research. Respect the natural environment and do not damage the landscape. Use toilets provided along the trail.

Personal tip: The Tongariro National Park is a beautiful, special and sacred place. The Crossing gives you a great taste of the park and volcanic landscape. However, please do not underestimate the difficulty of the track, it can be a dangerous environment. If you are unsure, take a cautious approach or opt for a guided tour.
