This black sand beach is one of Auckland’s most incredible and underrated locations. The West Coast beach is known for its stunning sunsets, wild waves and the surrounding cliffs. Lion Rock is an iconic volcanic feature, separating North Piha and South Piha beaches.

It’s a beautiful destination for surfers, swimmers and nature lovers, the perfect place to escape the busy city. It’s an absolute dream location for photographers, with a west coast sunset, dramatic scenery and plenty of different locations to capture - from the dunes, to the cliffs, to the bush and the ocean.

On a summer’s day, South Piha will often be crowded and busy with families enjoying picnics, beach cricket and other activities. Avoid the crowds by heading to North Piha instead.

Remember: The ocean is dangerous, there are rips and underwater currents. Lifeguards patrol during the summer months, always swim between the flags.

Personal tip: This is my all-time favourite escape to get out of the city. Piha always, always leaves you feeling better than when you arrived. Low tide is an awesome time to visit and explore the coastline. Discover lagoons, walk to a clifftop viewpoint, you may even find hidden caves and rock pools with starfish! Happy hunting :)
