One of New Zealand’s most beautiful beaches, Wharariki has been featured on the Windows desktop image more than once! It’s a remote beach at the northern tip of the South Island. The dramatic coastline features limestone stacks, caves, arches and large sand dunes. Allow several hours to explore the expansive beach.

You may also spot seals at Wharariki Beach, as they sleep in the caves or play in the surf near the shore. To reach the beach, it is a short 20 minute scenic walk through farmland and sand dunes.

Remember: Respect wildlife, stay 20m away from any seals and do not get in between seals and the ocean. Swimming is prohibited at Wharariki Beach, there are dangerous rips and underwater currents.

Personal tip: Wharariki is such a beautiful location, it is also so big that it will feel like you have the beach to yourself, even on a popular day! Sunset is a beautiful time to catch golden hour as the sun sets into the ocean.

Pronunciation: Wharariki: faa-kaa-ree-kee
