Located on the West Coast of the South Island, Punakaki is a small town, known for its “pancake rock” formations and blowholes. These are limestone formations that are layered - resembling stacked pancakes. Over time, the sea has eroded these features.

Follow the short loop track to get close to these rocks on the coastline - with viewing platforms, and spectacular blowholes. The blowholes are most dramatic around high tide, especially when there is swell.

Remember: Stay on marked paths and follow any signage.

Personal tip: Enjoy actual pancakes at the cafe across the road, for the complete Punakaiki experience!

Pronunciation: Punakaiki: poo-naa-kai-kee
