Campsite
This is the only place in Milford Sound where you can stay overnight, and it is well worth it. Whether you stay in the caravan park or treat yourself to their beautiful chalets, I highly recommend spending a night in Piopiotahi Milford Sound.
The Milford Sound Lodge is located in the Cleddau River valley, surrounded by the steep mountains that shape Milford Sound. The cabins have views of the river and surrounding mountains and the campsite is nestled in native bush. Treat yourself to a culinary experience at the Piopio restaurant with all ingredients sourced locally - lunch and dinner is available.
The campsite facilities are incredible - with hot showers, laundry facilities, a full kitchen and lounge/dining area. You can also use these facilities if you are staying in the cabins, as the cabins do not have cooking facilities.
Remember: Book in advance, particularly during the peak summer season as Milford Sound Lodge fills up quickly.
Personal tip: Wake up early for sunrise and go for a stroll along the Cleddau River. It’s magical - if it’s a clear day, you’ll see the sunrise colours and if it’s raining, you’ll witness all the waterfalls. Also don’t forget to look up at the sky on a clear night and take in the Milky Way stretched above you. Although Milford Sound can feel crowded and busy during the day, at the lodge you truly feel like you are isolated in paradise. It’s magical.
Pronunciation: Piopiotahi: pee-or-pee-or-tah-hee
