Waianiwaniwa or Rainbow Falls are a stunning waterfall located in the Bay of Islands, near the town of Kerikeri. The waterfall cascades over the cliff into a deep pool below and there is a large cave behind the waterfall, making it a unique spot to explore. In the summer months, this is a popular swimming hole and picnic spot for locals.
Access Rainbow Falls via a short walking track from the carpark, there are multiple viewpoints at the top of the falls, as well as a viewing location at the bottom of the falls. You can continue walking alongside the river for a short bush walk.
Remember: Stay safe, do not attempt to swim or get behind the falls after heavy rain.
Personal tip: It’s a really incredible experience to walk behind the falls, one of the most special things I’ve done! However, we did this during low flow, it was still very slippery, cold and wet with the spray from the falls. If you’re feeling brave - definitely do it! But assess the risks and do not attempt to walk behind the falls after heavy rainfall.
Pronunciation: Waianiwaniwa: wai-aa-nee-waa-nee-waa
