One of the lesser-known gems in the Tongariro National Park, this track is a beautiful alternative to the Tongariro Crossing. The pair of freshwater lakes - Upper Tama and Lower Tama are nestled in the mountains, against the backdrop of Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Ruapehu. The rugged landscape is out of this world

Starting from Whakapapa Village, this track is approx 5-6 hours return. It meanders through alpine tussock and volcanic terrain, with beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. You will also pass the beautiful Taranaki Falls, well worth stopping at!

Remember: This is an alpine environment and New Zealand weather can change drastically. It is recommended to take a sunhat and raincoat, and apply sunscreen, whatever the weather.

Personal tip: If you’re looking for a quieter hiking experience, this is it! It’s a beautiful alternative to the ‘highway’ of the Tongariro Crossing and is shorter and with less altitude gain - a win-win!

Pronunciation: Tama: taa-maa

Tongariro: tor-ngaa-ree-roe

Whakapapa: faa-kaa-paa-paa

Ngauruhoe: ngaa-oo-roo-hoe-eh

Ruapehu: roo-aa-peh-hoo

Taranaki: taa-raa-naa-kee
