This limestone cave network is famous around the globe for its glowworms. The small bugs emit a glowing blue light, making the cave roof look like a sky full of stars. There are also stalactite and stalagmite formations throughout the caves.

All visitors to Waitomo Caves must purchase tickets and it is recommended to book in advance. Walk around the caves, or opt for a guided tour, boat ride, or even black water rafting!

Remember: The caves are a natural fragile environment. Stay on marked paths and follow any signage.

Personal tip: My personal favourite is the black water rafting tour - it’s an experience for the adventurous, not for the claustrophobic… but it’s an incredible way to experience the cave network, see the glow worms and float in complete darkness. Terrifying, but so much fun!
