Elevador de Santa Justa ("Santa Justa Lift") is also known as Elevador do Carmo ("Carmo Lift") and connects the lower streets of Lisbon's Baixa ("downtown"), namely Rua do Ouro ("Gold Street") with the higher Largo do Carmo ("Carmo Square"). It has been operational since the year 1902.

Beware that this popular touristic attraction can be misleading: Just like Ascensor / Elevador da Glória ("Glória Funicular" or "Glória Lift"), the price of the ride as well as the long lines could be disproportionate to the duration and fun of the journey (it takes less than one minute to go up / down). Lusideias believes the best thing to do is to appreciate the architectonic features of Elevador de Santa Justa from the outside, both at the Rua do Ouro level and at the Largo do Carmo level.

To access Largo do Carmo, one can walk all the way up through Calçada do Sacramento or look for a shop called 'OSLO', at Rua do Carmo ("Carmo Street"), right in front of Elevador de Santa Justa. Inside this store, there is an elevator that can be used free of charge.
