This is one of the most challenging hikes I’ve tackled, and carrying an overnight pack made it ten times tougher. Mount Barney is a beast of a mountain, demanding a high level of endurance and hiking prowess. The 12-kilometer return trek is renowned for its steep and relentless terrain. As you climb, you'll weave through dense rainforest, scramble over rocky outcrops, and navigate rugged trails that push your stamina and agility to their limits. The final stretch is particularly grueling, with technical scrambling and exposed rock faces that require a solid head for heights and climbing skills, so come prepared for an adventure.

While you can definitely do this hike in a single day if you start super early, I opted to camp at the Rum Jungle campsite near the top. This allowed me to fully enjoy the stunning views without feeling rushed. The effort is absolutely worth it, once you reach the summit, you’re rewarded with breathtaking panoramic vistas of the Granite Belt region and beyond. The sense of accomplishment and the incredible scenery makes every challenging step worth it. Just be sure to bring plenty of water, and sturdy boots, and check the weather conditions before setting off. This hike is not for the faint-hearted, but if you’re up for the challenge, the rewards are unforgettable.
