Hancock's Lookout is, without a doubt, my favorite free campsite in the entire country of Australia. Whether you're venturing into the Flinders Ranges or simply passing through the area, this spot is a must-visit for a night or two. The views here are absolutely spectacular, South Australia's smooth, rounded mountains offer a striking contrast to the rugged charm of this site.

Located in Wilmington, South Australia, Hancock's Lookout provides sweeping vistas of Spencer Gulf and the Southern Flinders Ranges that will make you want to extend your stay indefinitely. To reach this gem, you’ll need to navigate a 7-kilometer dirt road. It’s a bit bumpy, but if you take it slow, any vehicle should manage just fine. Oh and keep your eyes peeled for adorable sheep lounging on the road and grazing on the surrounding hills, they add a delightful touch of local character to the journey.

Despite its stunning scenery, the campsite remains wonderfully peaceful. During my visits, which spanned about six nights over the course of my travels, I only ever shared the site with around 4 or 5 other campers. Although the site has no facilities beyond a few bins, the breathtaking views and tranquil atmosphere make it more than worth it. The sunrises and sunsets here are nothing short of phenomenal.
