Ah Cradle Mountain summit, one of my favourite hikes in all of Australia, located in the heart of Tasmania's Wilderness World Heritage Area this mountain is a nature lovers paradise and an adventure that you won't forget.  This hike is known for its dramatic peaks and stunning views taking you to one of Tasmania’s most iconic viewpoints. The journey is challenging but incredibly rewarding, offering panoramic views of the surrounding wilderness that are nothing short of breathtaking.

The hike to Cradle Mountain’s summit offers a variety of trails, allowing you to tailor your route based on what you want to see, the km distance you prefer, and your comfort level with difficulty. Let me explain to you what I think is the best way to make the most of your experience, I recommend starting your hike at Ronny Creek. From there, you can jump straight onto the Overland Track, heading towards Crater Falls and Marions Lookout. This initial segment offers some stunning views and serves as a great warm-up for the more challenging parts of the hike.

Continuing on the same track, you’ll reach the Historic Kitchen Hut, a good spot to rest and take in the panoramic views. From Kitchen Hut, you’ll start the ascent to Cradle Mountain’s summit. This section is known for its difficulty, with rocky paths and steep inclines. The final kilometer is especially tough, featuring lots of scrambling over boulders. I personally find this part of the hike exhilarating and fun, though it does require careful attention to your footing. This trail is popular, so expect to be cheered on by fellow hikers.

Once you reach the summit, the 360-degree views are truly breathtaking. You’ll have a panoramic view of the entire national park, which makes the challenging climb absolutely worthwhile. After soaking in the views, you can begin your descent. While you can return the same way you came, I suggest taking the Face Track for a different experience. From Kitchen Hut, turn right onto this track, which will lead you above Lake Wilks via a steep path.

As you make your way down, you’ll pass an emergency shelter and continue up to Hansons Peak. The views from here are magnificent, offering sights of Dove Lake, Twisted Lake, Hansons Lake, and Cradle Summit. The track will eventually take you to the shore of Dove Lake, where you can follow the Lake Roadway Track to reach the Dove Lake bus stop. This route totals about 13 kilometers and includes some challenging sections, but the varied scenery makes it a rewarding journey.

Overall, hiking to Cradle Mountain’s summit is a demanding but exhilarating adventure, ideal for avid hikers who want to experience Tasmania’s dramatic landscapes. Be sure to bring the appropriate gear, ample water, and enough food for the trek. With careful planning and preparation, you’ll be able to enjoy one of Tasmania’s most iconic peaks and the stunning views that come with it.
