A less-known alternative to the insta-famous Roy's Peak, Isthmus Peak is similar in height and length, but with views over both Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka. Starting at the edge of Lake Hāwea, the track crosses through farmland and winds up the mountain with the lake spread out behind you.

The area between Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea is called The Neck and from the summit of Isthmus Peak you will see both lakes. It’s spectacular and worth the effort for an alternative or additional hike to Roy’s Peak.

Moderate levels of fitness are required for this 6 - 8 hour return hike, over 16 km and 1,385m of elevation gain. There are also seasonal restrictions from Nov to Dec and March to May. Check the DOC website for up-to-date information.

Remember: Be prepared for all weather. The track is quite exposed to the elements, sunny in summer or windy in winter. You may require ice axes and crampons during winter.

Personal tip: This is a really beautiful track with views the whole way up and down. I recommend this to everyone who wants something off-the-beaten-track and personally did this hike before I did Roy’s Peak (and enjoyed it more too…). It’s a beautiful spot for sunset, but remember head torches and extra gear as temperatures will drop after dark.
